Signs of Meningitis

The scary thing about this story is that the only sign Charlie had of Meningitis was a temperature. His type was the one that doesn't have a rash and you always associate Meningitis with a rash. The moaning noise he was making when we went to A&E is a sign but even the staff there didn't suspect Meningitis. Here are the signs to look out for from the Meningitis Trust

Babies and Children

Fever with cold hands and feet
Pale blotchy skin
Spots/rash
Refusing food and vomiting
Unusual cry/moaning
Fretful, dislike of being handled
Tense, bulging fontanelle
Drowsy, floppy, unresponsive
Neck stiffness, dislike of bright lights
Rapid breathing or grunting
Convulsions/seizures

  1. Katy, I went to school with Jude McKay and saw her link to your blog on Facebook.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your sweet Charlie. I don't know if you've already found your way to these places, but there are a few things that helped me as a fellow babylost person:

  3. Katy,

I'm an old acquaintance of Lyndsey Green and she pointed me to your blog.

As a father myself, I can't imagine what you and your family have been through. My heart goes out to you. Your blog is a fitting and touching tribute to your son and a reminder to all of us just what a gift life is.

All I can say is, Charlie was clearly extremely lucky to have such loving and devoted parents as yourselves during his brief life.

I wish you strength in the days ahead.
    With Sympathy
    Stuart Clark

On behalf of the Meningitis Trust I would like to say a big thank you to the family and community who are raising funds for us to help us to support families just like Charlie’s who have been affected by meningitis. We would also like to say how courageous the family are in their efforts to help raise awareness by trying to stop this happening to others. If anyone has experienced meningitis, it doesn’t matter how long ago it was, we are just a phone call away if you would like advice, information or support. Please call our 24-hour nurse-staffed helpline 0800 028 18 28 or visit www.meningitis-trust.org.

It's amazing how many peopel have viewed this blog and I am sure it is prooving very moving and helpful to other families. I myself have just started to write a blog on the Meningitis Trust web site and hope it will be read by even a fraction of the numbers viewing your's - http://www.meningitis-trust.org/how-we-help/local-support/north-east/north-east-blog
